When to go, the right order of the shrines, registration, fitness, the helicopter question and what to pack — everything we wish every first-time pilgrim knew.
When to go
The Char Dham shrines open around late April / early May (on Akshaya Tritiya) and close around Diwali. The two best windows are May to mid-June, before the monsoon, and September to October, after it, when the skies are clearest and the roads at their safest. We generally advise pilgrims to avoid peak monsoon (July–August) in the higher valleys.
The route and the right order
The traditional circuit runs west to east: Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath — usually starting and ending at Haridwar or Rishikesh. Done this way the journey flows naturally with the geography and the rivers, and takes about 10–12 days at a comfortable pace.
Short on time? Many pilgrims do a Do Dham (Kedarnath and Badrinath) in 5–6 days. Each of the four shrines can also be visited on its own.
Registration, fitness and the helicopter question
Uttarakhand requires every Char Dham pilgrim to register; we complete this for you. Yamunotri and Kedarnath both involve treks (about 6 km and 16 km respectively), so some basic fitness helps — a few weeks of daily walking before the trip goes a long way.
For Kedarnath, ponies, palanquins (dolis) and helicopter services are available. We routinely arrange helicopter darshan for elderly pilgrims or those with knee trouble, so the whole family can travel together.
What to pack
Even in summer the higher shrines are cold, especially mornings and evenings. Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, good walking shoes, a personal medical kit with any regular medication, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Carry some cash, as network and ATMs are unreliable beyond Guptkashi and Joshimath.
