A monsoon trek into a UNESCO valley carpeted with wildflowers, and a steep, soul-stirring climb to Hemkund Sahib. Beautifully organised from Govindghat to the bloom.
Into the bloom
I travelled solo, and the team made me feel safe and looked-after from the first day. We drove from Rishikesh to Joshimath along the Alaknanda, then trekked up from Govindghat to the little village of Ghangaria.
Nothing prepared me for the valley itself. Mile after mile of wildflowers — blue poppies, Brahma Kamal, primulas — with mist drifting over the Pushpawati river. I must have taken three hundred photos and none of them do it justice.
The climb to Hemkund Sahib
The next day's climb to Hemkund Sahib at 4,329 m was brutal but worth every step. The glacial lake, the gurudwara, the langar tea in the cold — it was deeply moving.
My guide carried a first-aid kit, watched for altitude symptoms, and never once let me feel like a burden for going slowly. For any woman wondering whether to do this trek solo: with a team like this, absolutely yes.
